This Ain't No Love Story

Warning, this is going to be a long post.

Start of the Widdershins

I cast on for Widdershins. I wanted to get the initial toe increases out of the way. I was able to do one cable Friday night and then I packed it up. I did forget to pack the dpn I was using as a cable needle but thankfully, I had tried cabling without a cable needle in the past so I was okay. By the time I got to Boston, the sock looked like this:

Boston, the memories

I got myself up to Boston this weekend. It's amazing the stuff one remembers. I took the airport shuttle from terminal B to the T station and we drove past terminal C and terminal E. Last time I was at terminal C was on 9/11/2001 in the madness of the groundings post World Trade Center hits. Last time I was at terminal E, was the summer of 2001 on my month long jaunts in Europe and Asia. From the airport, I took myself to the North End so that I could get cake. The winds were bitterly cold. It was the Boston that I remembered. After a quick lunch and some cake, I got myself to the redline and headed for Porter Square. Again the memories came back. Alewife, the end redline station I used to park at for my jaunts into Boston. Kendall, where there was a thrift store with lots of old clothes from the last 20 or so years. I don't remember what it's called, but if I got out at Kendall, I could walk myself to it. I had bought a blue velvet dress there in high school. I think it was handmade since the seams looked like something I would do if I had made it. Next stop, yarn crawl.

Mind's Eye Yarns

I hadn't originally planned on coming to Mind's Eye Yarns. Upon a recommendation in my comments, and checking out the website and seeing fiber, I decided to go. I did have 3-4 hours to kill. It's located in a cute little house in Porter Square and was literally right off the T stop. Lucy, the owner wasn't there, but I did meet some other very friendly people. I tossed my stuff in the backroom and began my explorations. First I saw a wall of fiber for spinning. OOOOOO.

IMG_0981Then, I was shown some of the yarns in the shop including some of Lucy's own hand dyed sock yarn. I bought 2 colors, 2 skeins each to I could make knee highs if I wanted to. It's a superwash wool/ tencel blend.

I sat and knitted with some of the friendly people there. At one point, I looked up and said, "Oh My God!" because I saw:
IMG_0972
A Great Wheel!

I got up after a while and wandered the shop again and came across:

IMG_0983

The funny thing is that almost a month ago, I had actually bought something similar at Springwater:

IMG_0982

I had started spinning up this ball and realized that not only would this make a great laceweight for knitting up Cherry Blossom Shawl. Then, as I plied it, I thought it'd make a great sweater. But I only had just under a pound of this fiber! What to do? What to do? Well, there was 8 ounces of this stuff at Mind's Eye Yarns so it all came home with me. After doing enough damage there, it was time to head on over to Harvard Square to check out Woolcott and Co and then an early dinner and THE GAME. Woolcott was okay.

Harvard Sucks

As usual, pregaming was at John Harvards where anyone who could make it ended up. Then the walk over the Charles, which for once was actually warm. Then it was on to the game:

IMG_0973IMG_0974

Well, we lost. It hurts to lose, but it hurts A LOT to lose to Harvard. And their student fans suck. But then, we can't score on the Power Play. Our defense is shaky. Goaltending is questionable at times. It was the last game of the regular season and in the end, we finished 4th and they finished 8th in a league of 12. But wouldn't it be funny, to the annoyance of the other teams in the league, if it was still a Cornell/Harvard final in Albany? Then, it got bitterly cold.

Post Game

Post game took place at the Hong Kong with the Scorpion Bowls

Those things are tasty! It's like drinking juice! It did take quite a few plus a Long Island Iced Tea for me to achieve the desired effect. I yelled at another random begger guy on the street that night and then felt quite queasy.

Sunday's plane adventures

Sunday morning, I woke up to vibrations at my feet. I thought it was my phone, but I didn't see my phone. And then it vibrated again. Oh, it was my phone. US Airways had called to tell me that my 1:45pm flight had been cancelled for "aircraft maintenance". This is NOT the first time they've cancelled a flight for aircraft maintenance. Now, if you were scheduling a fleet of air crafts, wouldn't you have one or two that were "spares" that wouldn't be in use and you could rotate in if one of the places required maintenance? So I called their 800 number and had my flight changed to the 12:45pm flight. While on the phone I also started getting stern with the person on the other end because I asked, "Is this flight also going to get cancelled too?" and she didn't answer. Finally, I said, "I asked a question." Bloody hell, I may still be drunk, but when I ask a simple yes or no question, I expect an answer. She said she couldn't really hear me. Okay.

So I get myself to Logan and try to check in. I have this bad habit of showing up about an hour before my plane is scheduled to leave. When I get there, I find that DC and NYC flights have their own special tiny counter. And the line was LONG. I could maybe combine my stuff together to not have to check luggage but when I tried to get my ticket from the kiosk, it said to see an agent. Now I was swearing at the person I spoke to this morning for messing up my itinerary change. If there was no line and I didn't have the kiosk problems, I'd be all set. But having to wait in line, checkin would close before I got to the front of the line and I'd have to reschedule to the 2:45pm flight. I get to the front of the line and hear that they've cancelled the 12:45pm flight due to the weather. Before I left, I heard that we were supposed to get light snow and some icy rain. I didn't htink it was anything to worry about, other than an annoying layer of ice to scrape off my car. So I'm wondering how bad the situation really is down here. After checking in and getting myself on the 2:45pm flight, I go grab some food to help ease the pounding headache and since I thought my body could use something other than alcohol to process. I also texted Amber with the question "How's the weather down there?" Her response:

0225071241

A picture of her boyfriend's car with the snow that had fallen during the night.

Holy crap! No wonder we're grounded! I make myself comfortable in the waiting area and took a picture of Widdershins before starting my afternoon of waiting and knitting:
IMG_0979

Boy, was I glad I was making knee highs! I had quite a while to go before I ran out of yarn! Now, if I finished this sock before I got on the plane, that would not have been a good thing. I also took a nap...still hungover at this point. And then I knitted some more. And then they announced various flight cancellations. And then a plane flew in and I noticed that it had the Philidelphia Eagles logo on it.
IMG_0980
Eww. Eagles.

The DC sports fans had trained me well. Strangely, they were flying that plane down to National. Well, it flew down, couldn't land, and came back. They had everyone get off the plane and reschedule. Sometime during this time, I remembered the last time I had gone up to Boston for a Cornell/Harvard game. A storm had hit the northeast and shut down the airports in Philly, Baltimore and DC for a couple of days and Providence and Boston were also shutting down. I ended taking the train back. What fun, I'm doing this again! The announced more cancellations and I was lucky. I was ticketed for one of two flights they were going to try to fly down here. The gates got switched around a bit but no one moved since there was a chance we'd still leave from the same gate. Flights to LaGuardia were also delayed and cancelled cuz they were using planes stuck in DC. And then a sign, a plane was coming in. The passengers who arrived said they'd been sitting on the tarmac at National for 40 minutes. It was my plane. Whoo hoo! Then the crew showed up. Another good sign. And then we were on the plane. If sitting on the plane for hours is what it takes to get myself home, I'm all for it. I napped and knitted some more and finally we landed and sat and waited while they tried to clear a gate for us. National was a mad house. But eventually, I got my bag, and got to my car which didn't look so bad. It was still warm so the wet snow hadn't frozen yet so I was able to clear off the car quickly. Now I'm home, with the Oscars on, and with a headache. I'll leave you with a final picture of Widdershin, I'm ready to turn the heel:

Monkey off my back

Everyone periodically has a monkey on their back. Yeah, this was my monkey:

Monkey socks

Photo is courtesy of Amber. I was zooming along on these socks until the trip to New York when I knit and knit and knit and knit and knit. The continuous knitting on double pointed needles was NO GOOD and so I had to pause in the knitting. I had one and a half socks. After resting my hands for a couple of weeks, I picked up the needles and continued on like the tough cookie that I am. Well, after a row, my hands hurt again. My hands don't seem to agree with knitting in the round on tiny dpns. It because the monkey on my back that wouldn't go away. Then, I realized that I could very possibly switch over to 2 circular needles to continue on and finish the second sock. Why would circs be better than dpns? Well, for one, I wouldn't be contorting my left hand in various ways. When working with dpns, I can't knit continental. The needles and yarn and hands all get in the way of each other. So, I have to throw. But when I throw, my hands start to hurt, a lot. Switching to 2 circs, my hands wouldn't have to contort because stitches I'm not knitting sit on a flexible cable that can be moved easily out of the way.

So the Monkey is off my back. Details:

Yarn: Mama E's C*EYE*BER Fiber sock yarn in Poppy

Needles: Crystal Palace bamboo in size 2, switched to something grey and metal, also in size 2.

Pattern: Monkey from Cookie the great.

Next up, I've started working on Widdershins for some cabling fun. Yes I'm still throwing. Needles are too small for me to have enough control over tension to knit continental.

This weekend to Boston

I'll be spending this weekend in Boston, well, really Cambridge. It's Lynah East weekend where we play Harvard. Here's the wikipedia entry. For many years, there were no Harvard fans in the stands. Cornell fans attended and took over the place...hence, Lynah Rink in the east -> Lynah East! It's really a pity that Harvard has no fans because they're usually a decent team...until you hit the NCAA tournament and then they're a one and out team. So...this weekend:

  • Hockey game

  • Scorpion Bowl - which I've never had but am preparing myself for based on what I've heard

  • While hanging around at Harvard Square during the day, I think I shall have lunch and go see about hanging out at Woolcott and Co which appears to be the local yarn shop. I heard about this place on the It's a Purl, Man podcast. Side note on this podcast vs. Lime and Violet. This guy has the most mellow voice and something which would normally put you to sleep. As opposed to Lime and Violet who shriek and should keep you awake. But I have this weird ability to fall asleep listening to L&V while no sleeping problems with Purl Man.

  • See about going to Mike's Pastry which is this AMAZING Italian bakery in the North End. I used to buy $25 worth of cake for myself to bring back to school. Note that at that time, a slice of cakse was $2.50. and OMG!!!! THEY'LL SHIP ANYTHING FROM THE STORE!!!! A few years ago when I checked, shipping was about $50 for next day shipping but you know what, I haven't had this in a few years and it would SO BE WORTH IT!!!!!!!! But of course, I'm gonna try to bring some back with me this weekend

So that's my weekend.

One Monkey, To Monkeys

I just need to kitchner the second Monkey and then I'm done with the knitting! I'll do this at lunch tomorrow. Close my door, eat my food, kitchner my sock, take a nap :-) Then, all that's left is weave in the seams, put them on and take a picture. And I guess wash them, wear them out once, and wash them again before sending it to my friend.

Thinking ahead

Once I finish Monkey and Flower Meadow Shrug, I will need a new project and a new sock project. The new project will be the top down raglan. The sock project...I'm looking at either Falling Leaves which Amber is also working on or Widdershins the cabled version. I will be using one of my Schaefer Anner purchases. Any thoughts?

National Pancake Day

On Feb 20, 2007, between 7am and 10pm, you can go get a free shortstack. So...who's up for a late dinner Tuesday?

2 for 1

I was playing around with this idea in my head last night. For every two objects that I finish, I can buy yarn for one. The top down raglan yarn purchase isn't counting right now. So, for finishing the Flower Meadow Shrug and the Monkey sock, I can go get the kit for Lake Placid. Then, for finishing the top down raglan and something else, I can go buy more yarn. I'm not sure how this would work out. Now, let's say that I finish the Monkey sock first and still have the Flower Meadow Shrug to go. I can't say that Monkey + Flower Meadow Shrug is a pair, and Flower Meadow Shrug and top down raglan is a pair. That's no good. But maybe this will put me on the road to knitting productivity and knitting through the stash.

After all, when one is on a diet, one must be allowed to cheat a little, else one ends up on this insane binge!

It's been a while

Since I've gone days without posting. Work is my explanation. My brain is too tired to come up with things to say. Update on projects. I haven't beaded much since the last post. I've spun and knitted some. I've got the back and one sleeve of the Flower Meadow Shrug done. I still have another sleeve and the lace edgings. I forgot how quickly worsted weight yarn knits up. I've also switched Monkey onto DPNs. The sock would probably have gone into the "Forever Unfinished" bin if I hadn't because I don't think I'll be knitting with small DPNs again. It hurts too much. I've got 4 more repeats to go and then I can start the decreases for the sock and then be done with knititng. For finishing these two items, I can go get....

Lake Placid is a beautiful place. I wish they hadn't moved the annual league tournament away from there.

On my neck tomorrow

On my neck tomorrow will be this pretty little baby

IMG_0952

Astrophyllite stone. Instead of picots with seed beads, I used 6 mm Swarovski crystals. For the strap, a spiral rope made with size 8 triangle beads.

And later this week,
IMG_0958

Red glass cabochon. This one has the seed bead picots. It is hanging off of a spiral rope made with size 8 hex beads.

I think I need some better shots.

It's one of those weekends when I need to remember to stop and breathe and relax. I don't know how to relax. Saturday was a go-go-go day. I tried to take it a little easier today. But I need to stop and relax before I drive myself into the grave.

Dale of Norway Olympic kits

I've been really really really wanting to knit some Fair Isle. Last weekend in Ithaca, I was thinking how nice it would be to have some nice Fair Isle wool sweaters to wear in the cold. I've also greatly admired the Dale of Norway Olympic Team sweaters and have been wanting to know where I can find the patterns. Well, look what I found tonight! I'm trying hard to keep myself from buying it all.

Right up my alley

Joan McGowan-Michael of White Lies Designs has a new book coming out. This stuff is right up my alley. Yes, I have a strange fascination with the construction of the underclothes. I also love this woman's designs. Remember last year and the Knitting Olympics? I was working on her Angelina Jacket. That didn't turn out so well since my hand hurt then as well but I did eventually manage to finish.

In other news, I have bound off all stitches of the Flaming Moth. Whoo hoo! I just need to weave in the ends, wash and block. I am currently using it as a "lap blanket" because it is very big. Also, because I have a superstition that I can not wear red when Cornell is playing. They tend to lose. Cornell is currently playing RPI. RPI sucks this year, but on any given night, anyone can really suck. I hope it's not us tonight. So Flaming Moth is a "lap blanket". Sunday through Thursdays of hockey season, it is a shawl.

I should also have some pretty beady things to show too. I'm just realy sleepy right now.

And I found my cabochons!

Where's MY Interweave?

Well, where is it? :-(

Amber got hers. Helena got hers. I hope I get mine tomorrow...

Drinking from the cup

This post is for the menfolk in Helena's household.

In 2003, Joe Nieuwendyk won the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils. Each member of the winning team gets to spend a day with the Cup. Joe decided to bring the Cup to Ithaca and make it a fund raiser for one of his former teammates while at Cornell. The Cup's visit to Ithaca coincided with the annual alumni game. During the game, Joe stood with the Cup and took pictures with the line of fans that had come from all over the surrounding areas.

Usually, the post game celebration takes place at Dunbar's, a bar in Collegetown, owned by hockey fans and supporters. The place looks better in the dark, but when it's time to celebrate with the team, that is the place to be. Late into the night, the Cup made its appearance. More pictures were taken. At some point they started pouring beer into the cup and people started drinking out of it. Or really, two people would hold Stanley, and pour beer from him into an awaiting fan's mouth. By the time I got to meet Stanley, random half empty bottles of beer from the table were being emptied into the bowl. I have no idea what I was drinking. I came away thinking that the lip of the cup is a lot thicker than you would think, and I'm glad I didn't get my teeth knocked out.

You can read about this adventure of the Stanley Cup from the Hockey Hall of Fame journals.

Edit: Something I remembered from the Mighty Oracle's comment. Yeah, probably something with hockey trophies all being cup or bowl like. We do the same thing with the league trophy. It's a cup. It's smaller than Stanley and the one of the times the team won, they brought it to a bar in Albany and handed to the bartender and said, "Can you fill that with beer?" and they did!

An update on the Flaming Moth

There was a query tonight from Patricia about how the Flaming Moth was going. Well, I haven't touched it since I realized I didn't have enough yearn. This thing is huge and it had been a little warm to work on it since I was covered in something nearly the size of a lap blanket. Well, it got cold. I pulled it out tonight and finished off a row using the old yarn. Now I join in the new yarn for 2 rows and a final 3rd bind off row and then I can block. And I'll have my size 8 needles.

I am trying really hard right now to keep myself from buying wool to make a Dale of Norway sweater. There is a sweater I really like in one of the booklets I bought while at the Mannings that calls for Dale of Norway Daletta which is a fingering weight superwash wool. Now, when I think Dale of Norway wool, I wasn't exactly thinking superwash, so I have mixed feelings about this. Also, this fingering weight thing... I realize color work would make it thicker...but I was hoping for something that knit up a little faster. But this cold weather is making me want to knit some wool sweaters.

Scenes from Lynah

I've got the pictures from Lynah Rink here. The Saturday night game, they also honored the recently retired Joe Nieuwendyk right after the national anthems and the puck drop. We play both Canadian and American anthems. Nieuwendyk once played for us and went on to play in the NHL where he won the Stanley Cup 3 times. It is because of him that I had once gotten to drink out of the Stanley Cup. I don't know what I was drinking, but when you are offered the chance to drink out of the Cup, you don't ask questions, you just drink!

So we lost the game to St. Lawrence but it was a good time all around. Here are also some pictures of the Schaefer Anne sock yarn. Look at those yummy colors:

Finally, something that I've been working on:

Superbowl Sunday

And I spent a portion of it on the road. I do have pictures from Saturday, I'm just feeling lazy right now so they're not going to get uploaded.

I didn't make any yarn purchases while at the Mannings because I knew that I was waiting for Knitting Etc. The last time I was in Ithaca, I stood in that store admiring the Schaefer Anne yarn, and I hadn't been able to stop thinking about them. So this time, I went back and bought a couple of skeins of it. It is so pretty. It is a superwash wool and mohair blend and it is very soft.

Cornell lost to St. Lawrence last night but my friend did win the 50/50 raffle so she took us out for a drink and dessert and she still has her next stay in Ithaca covered.

Ithaca was COLD! I should've gotten the Ithaca is Cold t shirt while I was up there. I spent Saturday thinking about how nice it would be to live in Ithaca (again) because it's cold and I could make many many many wool sweaters in fair isle, or with a yoke neck, or some Dale of Norway sweaters, etc. And my friends were very amused. But I could knit myself sweaters and have many opportunities to wear them!

On the way back, I got a little lost around Harrisburg since I stopped on my way over to the Mannings on the way up and didn't remember exactly if I was supposed to pick up 15 from 83 or 81. I followed 81, got off at the 15 sign and realized that I've ended up on Harrisburg local roads and was supposed to have followed 83 to pick up 15. I ended up finding 83 and came down to DC by way of Baltimore and 95 instead of 270. I concluded this meant that I need to go up to Ithaca more often. But you know what, I really have a preference for the 95 -> 83 -> 81 route. I don't know why but I hate going up 270 to pick up 15 and 83.

I am knitting again. Not much, but I am able to. Oh, and I think I may have lost one of my dpns in Lynah.

Winter

On my way up to Ithaca yesterday, I stopped at:
IMG_0890
The Mannings.

It was really awesome. I managed to stop myself from buying yarn since I didn't really have anything in mind other than a top down raglan and I wanted to wait on that. So, pictures are over here.

So, all Thursday night and Friday morning, there was talk about horrible traffic and ice and bad weather...down in the DC metro area. I don't know what they're talking about. I didn't see any bad weather on the Beltway or up 270. In fact, the flurries only started when I got up to Binghamton and the snow really started AFTER I arrived in Ithaca!. This is what winter is supposed to look like:
IMG_0894

It turns out that I'm also staying that the same hotel as the Clarkson team...I'd like to go to the gym now and I hope that they're not all down there too. We did beat them last night 5 to 1 and Lynah...after the renovations is interesting. Everything seems to have gotten louder. It's supposed to keep snowing here, though right now, it's sunny outside and the sun is reflecting off all the snow. I'll have some pictures of the game tonight. Today involves some brunch and dinner with friends, a trip to Wegman's (the second of the weekend), and also the second trip of the weekend ot the LYS, Knitting Etc. They carry a lot of the Schaefer hand dyed yarn produced right on the other hill over in Interlaken, NY. In a strangely odd twist that makes this yarn even more endearing to me, the coach of Cornell's men's hockey team is named Schafer.

Urg! Urg!

You know what I hate? I hate that I can't find the cabochons I bought at the last Gem and Jewelry show. I also hate that I can't find my bluetooth headset and I need it this weekend cuz I'm going up to NY, state where you can't talk on a cell phone unless you're using a headset. I'm sure after I buy more cabs and another headset, I'll find them all again and kick myself.

Take a break so I talk about my beading

So...type type type type type. It's okay. Beading? No. Knitting? No. I just shouldn't do any gripping.

I worked on some cabochons tonight but my hands started to hurt. Just that gripping motion. I am a little upset about the cabs that I had bought at the last gem and jewelry show can't be found and I don't remember what I've done with them.

To answer questions on whether I sell my jewelry or not, presently no, but I hope to. Or even that I need to so people stop nagging me! :-) No, but really, I'd like to.

I spent a lot of last year occupied with the fiber. There was definitely a lot of fiber obsession. This year began with a need to bead. I think I was away from the beads too long. I'd like to design more patterns for flowers. I'd like to create more necklaces, at the very least for myself because I'm tired of looking at the same ones. After a year of talking about getting my beady wares out there, I will definitely try to do this year. That red cab necklace from few days back, that will be on the market before the end of the year, yes I know it's only January. I've got another one in the works that's a darker more muted color. I really don't think I wear that particular shade of dark. I tend to stick with the dark blacks and greys. I may start listing them over on the designs site, but throw a few items out onto Etsy. Some flowers in my house as well may go on Etsy.

But for me, this is a big step, putting myself out there. One thing is just to not be afraid to say, "Yes, I made this and yes I sell these, take a look." Another is being a little nervous when I place a certain value on a piece and the reaction is, "That much?!?" One last hurdle is the whole creative process for me. I would say that part of this leans more towards art than craft. I do this for my own enjoyment and I do what I do according whichever muse is inspiring me. I can't crank out pieces one after another. Every stone is different, inspiring something just a little bit different. Look at that red cab. Compare this and this. I had honestly intended to create a second near identical one. But the muses were telling me different. And right now, I also have some physical limitations preventing that. I'd love to be able to consistently bring out pieces, but sometimes, you just need that inspiration, or the swift kick in the ass, to get a move on and do it. So I guess we'll see how it goes.

I'll end this post by saying: If those of you reading don't see more than one piece of jewelry be listed somewhere (anywhere) by the end of March, feel free to really yell at me then.

Non Knitting activities....day 1

I can't believe I'm watching horrible American Idol auditions while I wait for House.

I've decided that since I really shouldn't be knitting or making flowers or spinning, I'm going to try to do knitting and beading related stuff that involves as little knitting as possible. Some items on my to do list:

  • Chart out the Flower Meadow Shrug since I was having such difficulty with the written directions. - Done. I did this at lunch.

  • Top down raglan calculator - As a good little software developer with bosses who believe in being lazy...cuz it makes for a better developer...I looked first to see if something like that already exists. Well, it does. Please see link below and I will be adding to the side bar as well, so... - Done

  • Get the Simple Knitted Bodice pattern, start swatching with Silky Tweed and alter the pattern. The pattern calls for worsted weight and I think the Silky Tweed is using DK.

  • Write out the Phalaenopsis Orchid pattern

  • I'm going to attempt to do quick tutorials for Sweet Life Knitters on chart reading, reading your stitches and fixing some simple mistakes

I think I need to add to this list. I want to avoid major knitting and beading until Monday. Though, I will attempt some more jewelry and see how my hand feels about that.

Links
Custom Knitting Graph Paper - plug in your gauge, go, and print! It's simple and quick

General sweater generators - Yeah, I'm so not reinventing the wheel.

Alpacas and beads

Tomorrow night (Jan 30, 2007) at 10pm EST on the Discovery Channel, the episode of Dirty Jobs with the Alpaca Shearer is on tv!

In other news, since I can't really knit, spinning hurts a bit, and beaded flowers might also hurt, I've been doing some beading. My officemate Svitlana will be happy because she'll get to see more necklaces and jewelry pieces. I've got this piece mostly finished. I just need to get a clasp. Gold or brass or maybe even copper clasp. No silver since silver won't go well with this:
IMG_0879

That's a glass cab in the center. The strap is a spiral rope made with size 8 hex beads. I love the hex beads.

Back to fiber

I really wanted to keep the orchid up top for a couple of days but I seem to have things to babble about. I realized that I need to get spinning on some fiber since the drafting and plying class is coming up in a couple of weeks and it takes me at least a week to spin up an ounce of fiber. That ounce of fiber will fit on one bobbin. I need at least 2 bobbins...eeek! In other news, I have also started on the Flower Meadow Shrug. Knitting is slow going but I'm progressing quickly since there aren't all that many stitches and it starts off with a lot of short rowing.

Phalaenopsis Orchid

First up, I went to Springwater today and bought some fiber. There's a 3 oz ball of merino that I'll be using for the drafting and plying class. There's a 15 oz ball of painted merino. They are so soft.

Okay, but really, this post is about:

Amber's mom, Anne, was in a really horrible accident at the beginning of January. She is very lucky to be alive and have as few injuries as she did. When I heard, I thought, "She needs flowers!" Then I realized that I don't really give people real flowers so I thought to bead something. When I asked, Amber said her mom likes white orchids. Well, I've been wanting to make a more life like phalaenopsis orchid and well, they don't tend to live at my house. So I've been working on prototype orchids and last week, I found a shape that I really enjoyed. I began working on this plant this past Saturday and assembled the stem and planted Thursday night. The pictures have all been hidden until I was able to give Anne the orchid.

To say that I've been giddy since Thursday night is an understatement. I'll have flowering orchids year round! I am very very happy with this. I've taken many notes on how this was made and I plan on writing up the pattern. I just wanted to get this made, see the final project and present it so that she has something pretty to look at everyday while recovering.

I was able to stop by and visit with her today and she was up an knitting an intarsia sweater. Recovering, but still hurting. She also really loved the plant. At one point, the afternoon sun shone through the window right onto the orchid and Amber was able to get some pictures. These will be in her flickr account.

Technical Details:
All beads in this orchid are from Toho. The petals are white with yellow. But! To really have completed this, the two larger white petals are made with opaque white beads (Toho 41). The 3 back petals are made with frosted white/clear beads (Toho 1F). This subtle difference in beads added depth to each flower. Along these lines, I also used two shades of yellow, even though there really isn't a lot of yellow. I used Toho 175 and 175F. The leaves are made with Toho 1046. There are 8 flowers, 3 on one stem, 5 on the other. There are also buds of different sizes, and 4 leaves.

This last picture, I took Thursday night. I was trying to find a place in the house to pose the orchid for my "portfolio" shot but couldn't think of one. Instead, I found the table with the orchid. Where the beaded one sits usually sits 2 pots of African Violets.

I...

  • was finally able to switch over to blogger beta, new blogger, whatever you want to call it and add tags!

  • am still in the process of tagging all my posts, most recent ones being tagged first. I've got 2 years worth of babblings. Major categories (Beaded Flowers, Knitting, Fiber) are there

  • got me some Moo cards. I've liked this idea as a personal calling card after seeing Amber's set. There are beady things on them which will come in handy for teaching!

  • Managed to pick up stitches on the second Monkey sock. I knit 2 rounds tonight and that was about as much as I could do:

    IMG_0867

But in the mean time, I have lots of beady and fibery things to keep busy with.

  • Continuing to spin and fondle the suri alpaca/mohair blend.

I love the hockey reference

Sock Madness - based on the NCAA basketball's March Madness which I really don't give a rat's ass about. There's a post whose title caught my eye in bloglines because as a somewhat knowledgeable hockey fan, "Adams, Norris, Patrick, and Smythe" were the four divisions of the NHL. There was no Northeast, Southeast, etc. Hmm, those are the only 2 of 6 I remember. How sad is that? Anyways, I was just surprised at the hockey reference.

My March Madness lasts about 3 weeks and goes into April. My March Madness also involves me holing up in my house watch hour after hour of hockey on tv. Then I am hungover on Monday and Tuesday, without having touched a single drop of alcohol all weekend. My birthday actually kicks it off this year. I can't wait.

Pictures to come this weekend. No, not of hockey. But of pretty things. For now, no bead, no knitting, but I'll do some spinning and go to sleep.

Today's Updates

I'm hungry, damn it. Okay, besides that, I spent a lovely evening at Bead Obsessions making:
IMG_0834

My very own beaded spinning wheel oriface hook

I also managed to take a better picture of the red calla lilies at the shop. Patricia had a piece of fabric that was white so we took a nice picture:

IMG_0842

Those are the cherry amber red (Toho 2153) and the stem is Toho 37. I shaded 2 of them. On our way home, Amber ran into some car trouble. Fortunately, I had some jumper cables in my trunk and Patricia knew how to use them.

IMG_0845

And since my hand has been hurting and I was working on orchid today, I decided to come home and spin and test out the oriface hook. First, the oriface hook fits! So, the bobbin was spinning funny and then I finally looked back at the instructions and realized that I had the bobbin on backwards, so when I flipped it over, it just didn't work. I was spinning this multicolored dyed wool stuff of unknown origin that had vegetable fiber I kept picking out on it. I decided to put that away and start spinning some nice black suri mohair blend I had bought at My Favorite Yarn Shop on the the bead/yarn crawl with Helena earlier this month, which I could've sworn I had blogged about...but I guess not :-( Wowee. Again, what a difference the fiber choice makes while spinning. I have Spinny going fast and this baby is nice!

Beading 2007

IMG_0817

Beads are size 11/0 Toho 1046. These were meant for some peony leaves but I've discovered that they're a great shade and finish for some orchid leaves. Patricia, if you're reading this, I see another order for another bag of the 1046 sometime this year!

I'm hoping these leaves will be planted by Wednesday night. I was working my way through the flowers on Saturday and have done some lacing and made more petals today...but I'm out of beads again, in my house where I have a bazillion kilos of beads. But no, I don't own the opaque white beads I'm using. I have not found a good use for opaque beads, until possibly now. Yes that's, I hope to have this 2 stem, 8 flowers orchid with buds and 5 leaves made and planted by Wednesday.

So, beading came before the fiber and I was heavily distracted by the fiber last year. Flower beading readers, don't worry, I'm back. Plans this year include a phalenopsis orchid and large (LARGE) peony and bells of Ireland arrangement for the Del Ray Artisans bead show, and working my way through Donna DeAngelis Dickt's 3 orchids from the 2006 flower seminar. I am so working through many phalenopsis orchids, pattern and class to come later this year, since I lugged back a good kilo of bright colors from NYC for this specific purpose. And I'll have some nice Christmas presents for people when I'm done. Between the knitting of the shawls/scarves and the orchids, I should be all set for Christmas! This is starting out a beading year. I must work through my (bead/fiber) stash!

So, I will end today's blabberings with words from a Liz Phair song. It was on my playlist while I was at the gym today. The song is "Extraordinary":

I am just your ordinary average everyday sane psycho.

Musings

  • I've been doing good with the exercise and food. I have a test coming up...a trip to Ithaca

  • I think this looks interesting. Color me intrigued.

  • I am knitting slowly so I don't kill my hands. Had a good morning at Wegman's. I'm not working the heel flap and a few more rows to go before I turn the heel on Monkey #2.

  • I like bagels and lox :-)

  • All calla lilies are present and accounted for at Bead Obsessions

Monogamy is not for everyone

Because sometimes, your hands hurt and if you only stay with that one thing, you end up with hurty hands that eventually don't function. I think the size 2 needles are going to kill my hands soon. I also think I'm going to break down soon and either finish up the Flaming Moth or start the swatch for the Flower Meadow Shrug. I might have to put Monkey #2 on hold for a few days while my hands work with larger sized needles. If the 6-8 needles don't work, I might go make my second felted bag on the 13s. At least now is about bed time and I can go to sleep so I can get up early to go to the gym, then for a yummy brunch and knitting at Wegman's. I love Wegman's!

A little bit of crazy, a little bit of wow!

knotnotwar 1,000. That looks pretty cool. I haven't checked out the actual pattern yet. You RSVP to do this by March 1 and the donation deadline is May 1. Now...that is a bit of a time crunch and I have a lot to do before then...

One monkey

IMG_0814

I still need to weave in the ends but otherwise, I've got a sock. My foot is really warm! I still marvel at the wonders of knitting a sock! Tomorrow, I start on the other sock. Then, after that I'll be starting on the Flower Meadow Shrug. I bought the pattern and yarn from Lisa Souza at Stitches East. Not only am I trying to be a good girl in terms of fiber and bead buying, I'm trying to stay monogamous to my knitting projects! And somewhere in here, I'll finish up the Flaming Moth because I got my yarn from Lisa Souza! Still waiting on the Sock! yarn part of the order.

Weekend fun and more orchids

Saturday was spent doing a lot of spinning. Sunday was spent teaching intro to French Florals. Monday was spent day tripping in NYC on a bead and yarn crawl. I bought A LOT of beads... I also bought some yarn. But I need to take a break from the knitting because my hands are getting tingly.

Monkey while at Knit New York.

We introduced a newbie knitter to the joys of a yarn swift and ball winder and had many people come out back to find what the laughter was about. I'm exhausted so I left work at 5:30 today to come home, eat, do some beading and sleep. Beading consisted of finishing up the orange orchid here:
IMG_0807
The orange is prototype 2. The white was prototype 1.

I think that I am actually happy with the result of prototype 2. The petal proportions are about right. I think I'll stare at the lip a little more to see if I like it. Also, those silver lined orange beads are a much better improvement over the pearl white. I think I also need to do some shading.

From fiber to yarn

Just before Christmas, I began spinning up some Romney that I had bought from Spunky Eclectic. I have been spinning a little bit everyday. Yesterday, Amber, Amber, Nina, and Helena over for a Marathon of "House" and spinning and knitting. They knitted, I spun. And I spun and I spun the Spunky Eclectic. When I finished off the fiber, I plied, and plied and plied and produced:
IMG_0786

IMG_0787

Then I set and hung them out to dry in the bathroom, hanks of beads being used as weights:

IMG_0788

And then there was the finished handspun yarn. I'm quite happy with it! My wraps per inch tool is telling me that it's about 24 wraps per inch which places it just a little thinner than fingering weight. Lace weight is supposed to be 35+ WPI so i wonder what's in between. What do I plan on using this for? I think something out of Victorian Lace Today.

1 finished Wing o the Moth

Pictures courtesy of Amber.

Moth-DoceureEtSoie
Moth-DoceureEtSoie-Detail

Pattern: Wing o the Moth

Yarn: Knit 1 Crochet 2's Doceur et Soie in Cafe au Lait. It took almost 4 balls.

Needles: KnitPicks Options, size 6.

I made this for my coworker's baby shower and it is the most amazing yarn!

I can't grow orchids

Really. This poor little baby:

IMG_0783

I bought at Whole Foods last night. If it's lucky, it will live for another year. Most likely though, it will be dead within 6 months. My main purpose in buying it was so that I could have a model:

IMG_0779

to attempt to make this:

IMG_0778

which is Prototype 1...which I'm not all that happy with. The lip is awful and the general shape is too round. Also, those beads, I really think those pearl white beads are only good for daisies. Yes, I'm very critical of flower designs.

I'm so bloody tired

Why? Because I finally went to bed close to 2am last night blocking:

Also for your viewing pleasure, some close up shots:

What now? In knitting, I'm working on Monkey with the Mama E fiber. I'm also working on more calla lilies for Bead Obsessions and find myself with the urge to bead many many flowers. So hopefully, more pictures of stuff to come!

Bad pictures of a pretty calla

This one is going to Bead Obsessions on Sunday.

Current project status

  • I'm working on some calla lilies for Bead Obsessions. I'm bringing the first one over on Sunday and I'm going to make a couple more for an arrangement. The class is on February 10th.

    PA260029

  • Flaming moth is still sitting around since I'm still in Lisa Souza's dye queue.

  • Doceur et Soie moth is being worked on. I hope to present it next Friday and show it off next Thursday night at SLK. This means that it needs to be blocking by Wednesday night. I'm going to be a knitting fiend the next couple of days.

  • Leaf Litter - I'm almost done spinning the first 2 oz. Remember I started this just before Christmas? I've been doing this a little bit at a time at a really thing thread. It will be plied to probably something like light sockweigh after it's been set.

  • I just cast on for Cookie's Monkey sock pattern.

  • And of course, I have lots of other knitting and beading stuff. But hopefully, some pictures to come!

Adding to the confession

Based on my weight gain and body fat percentage...I put on about 5 pounds of muscle and the rest of it was fat. That's pretty amazing for someone who completed a marathon this year, eh?

Why am I posting this? We have an obsession with weight and appearance. But this is another case of "You can't judge a book by its cover" where I sure as heck don't look like I weigh close to 160 pounds. Most people assume I weigh a lot less. And now you're all going to hate me more when I say that this is also when I give thanks to my parents and ancestors for my genes.

Am I satisfied with my appearance? Yes, except for the fact that my pants don't fit and if I'm not careful, I'm going to have to buy new pants.

Why do I feel the need to lose weight? Because 27% body fat is way too high for me. Ideally, I'd like to be back running at about 20% which based on current calculations puts me at 145 pounds. 20% used to be around 140 pounds. I remember how the body felt then and it was great and running smoothly.

Do I care that you all know how much I weigh? Not really. And you all probably all hate me.

Confession Time

I don't look it, but I do.

Height: 5 ft 6 in

Weight: 158 lbs

Body Fat %: 27.2

If I can get back to 140, then I would've lost all the weight I've gained in the past year and be back at about the 20% body fat that I'd like to be at...which is where I started in the first place 2 years ago. The scary thing is I did train for the marathon last year.

This year...2007

I want to...

  • Learn to have some self control in terms of managing my money. Although, I think I may have had enough with the beads and fiber for now. I feel like buying more at times...but I also don't know what I'd do with some of it until I've knit through some of it, which brings me to...

  • Work through some of my yarn stash. There's a lot of things I have in mind for the yarns I have but I haven't had a chance to get to them. I even want to make socks, and eventually a pair for myself!

  • Get rid of the 20 pounds I put on last year. How does this help? Well, I can spend a lot of money on food, and that's because I can eat a lot of food. I may not look it by looking at me, but trust me, I can eat a lot of food.

  • Run another marathon. I hope this will help with the lose 20 pounds goal. I hope because I did run a marathon last year...when I gained the 20 pounds...

  • Be more open with friends. My conclusion on this first day of the year is that my friends keep me human. They remind me of how to feel. They keep me from going to the dark side, where there is no feeling, and that would be bad.

  • Design more floral patterns. I've strayed from that.

Spinning into the new year

Literally. See:

LeafLitter

I was playing catch up with Spinny. The fiber itself has all the different colors and for a while, the thread being spun up was mostly yellow. It's really kind of amazing how you can anticipate the final outcome, and at the same time, not. I'm thinking of making a scarf out of Victorian Lace Today with the spun up stuff.

So happy new year everyone! It's been a long year and my head is still spinning. Yes, there are a lot of things spinning in this house. For a long time, I was very unsettled. It didn't help that I was moving every 2-3 years. But I think I have finally settled down long enough in one place to be comfortable. It's a nice feeling. I'll have a goals post coming up here in the next couple of days. It's like New Year's resolutions.

My trip to Florida was awesome. We saw a couple of really fluky goals (in our favor). One of them was when we were on a line change and were just dumping the puck into the Maine zone. Bishop (Maine goalie) was out of the net so it was WIDE OPEN, and the puck hit the boards, and bounced into the net and bounced out again. We were all screaming but I at least wasn't quite sure if that was a goal or what. The Cornell guy standing closest to the puck wasn't sure either cuz the puck had bounced out of the net towards him and he was looking around unsure of what he should be doing. And then we all realized that the ref had called it a goal and we all started celebrating. But we did lose to Maine in the end. I got to meet some more of the online posters and caught up with some old friends. I spent a good 48 hours either drinking, or recovering from the drinking. And now it's Jan 1st and I must go back to the very disciplined life...like going to the gym today.
